The Palacio de Casadevante palazzo dates from the Renaissance period (17th century). Its façade dates from 1616, though parts of the building date back to an earlier construction from 1536. Along with the Palacio Zuloaga, it ranks as one of the finest buildings in the town. The outstanding façade was designed by architect Miguel de Larrañaga, who was probably influenced by the great architect and engineer Tiburzio Spannochi, which would explain its similarity to the latter’s Palacio Arbelaitz palazzo in Irún.
The style is Baroque, with a rectangular ground plan and a gabled roof. The building stands in the Old Quarter, and its main façade is finished with a moulded cornice and carved corbels.
It was here, in the Palacio de Casadevante, that negotiations took place in 1638 for a truce between the Prince of Condé, who was laying siege to the town, Captain of the Town Diego de Butrón and Governor Domingo de Eguía Close to the hotel façade on the same street is a plaque that reads “En esta casa se reunieron y negociaron los emisarios del Príncipe de Condé, para concertar los terminos de la tregua que siguió al sitio de 1638” . (“In this house the emissaries of the Prince of Condé met to arrange the terms of the truce that followed the 1638 siege”).
In 1659, when Princess Marie-Therese of the house of Austria, daughter of King Philip IV, was travelling to France to marry Louis XIV, she spent the night immediately prior to her wedding here. The marriage took place by proxy at the church of Hondarribia, with López de Haro acting as the authorised proxy for Louis XIV. A second ceremony was held the following day in the church of St. Jean de Luz
The great entrance hall contains two altarpieces that originally stood in the church of La Marina and a huge gold Corinthian capital that is now used as a display table. The floor and beams date form the time when the building was first constructed.
The banister of the stairway up to the rooms is bronze, and dates from the 17th century.
The building was awarded historic monument status on January 17th 1964.
